Deaf Curling is a part of The Deaflympics. It has been a Deaflympic sport since 2007.

During the Deaflympics, each nation may enter one men and one women’s team. Each team can register four or five players.

For each curling team participating in the Deaflympics, they must wear identical uniforms. Each article of the uniform must have the players surname across the upper back of the article of clothing. If a team wants to wear a cap or hat, they should be identical and reflect the country that they are representing.

The sport of Curling originated in medieval Scotland in 1541.

The objective of Curling is for players to slide stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area, which is split into four segments. The game of curling is related to bowls, boule and shuffleboard, as it has an element of each of those sports involved.

Curling consists of two teams of four players. The two teams have eight polished heavy stones which are called “rocks”. The players use these stones to try and accumulate the highest score in the game. Points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the “house”. Points are added up after both teams have thrown their eight stones.  This is known as an “end”. A game can consist of eight or ten ends.

The equipment needed to participate in the sport of Curling is: Curling sheet, Curling Stone, Curling Broom and Shoes and Curling Pants. Less important equipment that can be used in Curling is Stopwatch and Mittens. If you are wondering if you need to go and buy your own stones and curling brush, don’t fret as the ice rink should supply those. All you would need to bring with you are a pair of rubber soled shoes.

The Curling Sheet is an area of ice which should be as flat and level as possible. The sheet measures 150 feet in length and 16.5 feet in width. The “house” is marked at each end of the sheet. The house consists of three concentric rings. The three rings have diameters of four, eight and twelve foot. These rings help to determine which stones are closest to the house.

The Curling stone is a stone disc made of Granite which weighs between 38 and 44 pounds. The stone also has a handle attached to it. The circumference of the stone is 36 inches.

The Curling Broom is a hollow tube made of fibre glass or carbon fibre which has a head made of fabric, hog hair or horsehair.

The shoes used for Curling are similar to athletic shoes; with the exception they have dissimilar soles. One of the shoes is known as the slider shoe, this is for the sliding foot and the non sliding shoe is for the hack foot (Hack: similar to a starting block in track and field, the foothold device where the person who throws the rock pushes off for delivery). The sliding shoe has a Teflon shoe. The sliding shoes are worn by the thrower during the delivery and by the sweepers to glide down the ice. The non sliding shoe is worn by the thrower during delivery and is designed to grip.

The sport of Curling has benefits in both fitness and cardiovascular.  It is also a sport that people of all ages can participate in. Curling is a very social sport, as you play on a team with three other people, that cheer you on. Before and after the Game of Curling opponents shake hands. Each game of Curling you play expands your circle of friends, so this is an excellent sport for shy people to play.
