Blind Ten-Pin Bowling

Paralympic Ten-Pin Bowling is for blind or visually impaired people.

Blind bowlers can use either a sighted guide or a guide rail to help them deliver their ball.

A sighted guide assists the bowler in aligning their shot. A guide's other job is to inform the bowler which pins have been knocked down. This helps the bowler in choosing where to roll their next ball.

The guide rails which also help with delivering to the pins can be made of either wood or light-weight tubular metal. The guide rails are placed alongside the bowling approach which is positioned to run straight along the first board outside the width of the lane.

A bowler who uses the guide rail usually slides one hand along its smooth surface while delivering the ball with the other hand. This teaches the bowler to use the same starting position on the guide rail each time, and also helps the bowler determine where the ball is being released in the lane.
